About Glade Creek Wilderness

Located within the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, Glade Creek Wilderness comprises approximately 5,670 acres of rugged mountain terrain largely shaped by the watershed of Glade Creek. Established in 1983, this wilderness area features steep ridges, narrow valleys, and heavily forested slopes that support mixed hardwood and conifer stands, including hemlock and yellow birch. The wilderness is renowned for its clear, cold streams, which provide excellent trout fishing opportunities. Glade Creek Wilderness provides a quiet setting with limited trail development, appealing to backpackers, anglers, and hikers seeking solitude. The area offers a primitive experience with no motorized access or developed facilities, preserving its natural condition. Wildlife includes black bears, white-tailed deer, and a variety of bird species, making it a favored spot for wildlife viewing and photography. Visitors can explore the rugged landscape via the Glade Creek Trail, which follows the creek through narrow gorges and cascades, or venture onto multiple lesser-used trails for loop hikes and longer backpacking trips. Its proximity to the larger Otter Creek Wilderness to the north expands opportunities for extended exploration. The wilderness’s relatively low visitation combined with its scenic creek corridors and old growth forest remnants create an appealing destination for those looking to experience West Virginia’s Appalachian backcountry.
